Bag Presses are used for creating curved laminated surfaces and panels for construction and surface finish. Our product range has developed and grown with the experience gained in real workshops. We take a commercial view in all the advice we give and prefer to offer recommendations based on this experience rather than regurgitating ‘accepted wisdom’.
For example, we press and veneer nearly all non-structural panels using a high grade D3 PVA rather than a UF or Resorcinol resin. PVAs have improved dramatically in recent years to the degree that they are the ideal adhesives for vast majority of vacuum press requirements. The simplest type of vacuum press uses a sealable bag and some form of vacuum pump. By placing materials in the bag, sealing it and then sucking out most of the air, a pressure differential is created between the reduced pressure inside the bag and atmosphere on the outside. It is this pressure differential that is used in vacuum pressing. This is our most popular professional system and is, like its little brother, fitted with an industrial quality vacuum pump that is designed for 100% duty cycle, in other words you can just leave it running. This system develops a vacuum level of around 85% which equates to over 8.5 tones per square metre. It is supplied with a 300 micron seamless polyurethane bag, two sealing strips and a footswitch assembly, enabling you to turn the pump on and off whilst keeping both hands free to position your work in the bag. The bag can be upgraded to a larger PVC one or a seamless one made of polyurethane, a material that is substantially stronger and more puncture resitant than PVC and which doesn't stiffen at low temperatures. The higher flow rate of this systems pump means that it can be used for vacuum templating on a router table and for securing vacuum straight edges and trimming jigs.
